Creeping up to 100
First-time starter gets Glyshaw a win
- By Tim Ethridge

Tim Glyshaw didn't know what was ahead when he chucked a middle-school teaching career to work with horses. He just hoped that if he put in the work he would be rewarded.
On Saturday, opening day at Ellis Park, the Evansville native took another step up the ladder, notching his 100th victory as a trainer when first-time starter Conservative Value captured the fourth race, a $30,000 maiden race for 2-year-olds.
"The funny thing is I had never won with a first-time starter," said Glyshaw, a Harrison High School graduate who now works a barn of 22 with his wife Natalie.
"I wasn't really sure what to expect of this one because we had a little setback in training, but even though he didn't break well he ran a big race."
Glyshaw, who also had a second-place finisher with Ella Pooh in the third, wasn't the only one at the track enjoying himself. Owner Ron Geary was happy with good weather and a mostly seamless opening day, with an official count of 5,032 fans that, with cars parked over the levees, appeared low.
"We had a bump or two, as you expect on the first day, but we're still very, very pleased," said Geary. "We had a good crowd and we some good racing, which is what we're here for.
"We've got some loyal horsemen who support us, and we're grateful for that."
Glyshaw is one of them. Now 41, he graduated from Indiana University in 1992 and spent two years teaching in Illinois. Looking for a career change and remembering happy days spent at Ellis Park as a teenager, he took on an internship at Taylor Made Farm.
He quickly went from hot walker to groom to assistant trainer, meeting Natalie, a Louisiana native from a racing family, along the way. They opened their own stable on July 1, 2004, and have built the business ever since.
Based at Churchill Downs in the spring, summer and fall and Fair Grounds in the winter, Glyshaw now has 100 winners in 557 starts — and has had 250 finish in the money. His barn now includes 22, including starter allowance star Ready's Rocket, a 7-year-old who has matched a Churchill record with eight wins in that track.
Glyshaw is waiting to see how Conservative Value turns out. The 2-year-old gelding got a late start as it was tied up with the financial troubles of breeder Stonewall Farm but has shown promise in training.
"I'm really happy for the owners (David Osborne of Loosen Up Stables) because they've really stood by me," said Glyshaw. "They're just good people to work for."
And, in turn, they're getting good work. Glyshaw said, like every trainer, he'd like to hook up with a big horse, a Kentucky Derby or Breeders' Cup contender. But he and Natalie also like to keep the stable at a number where they can get the most out of each horse.
"I was surprised when Natalie told me we were closing in on 100 wins," said Glyshaw. "I just got into this because I thought it would be interesting, and it has been. There aren't any dull days doing this."
